Sports were introduced into the public schools in the U.S. because of the need to provide every student with an opportunity for a good education. Sports were also viewed as an extension of physical education. They also were included in the school curricula because both students and their parents were interested in sports.

As America became more industrialized, the schools and health educators found that physical education and sports introduced competition into the schools. Competition was the basis for much of industrial growth of the U.S. Furthermore, it also was the basic principle of all sports generally. Sports also served as a means of understanding and unifying the nations of the world.
